Org. Setting and ReportingThis position is located in the Policy Planning Team (PPT), Policy and Best Practices Service (PBPS) within the Policy, Evaluation and Training Division (DPET) in the Department of Peace Operations (DPO). The Political Affairs Officer reports through the Team Leader, PPT, to the Chief, PBPS. The incumbent coordinates the implementation of peacekeeping-specific actions of the Pact for the Future, notably the recommendations from the review on the future of all forms of UN peace operations. ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Coordinates the implementation of relevant actions pursuant to the Pact for the Future (A/79/1) as relevant to UN peacekeeping as well as the UN80 initiative. The incumbent will help spearhead the coordination and implementation of specific recommendations emanating from the review on the future of all forms of UN peace operations, as mandated by the Pact for the Future action 21b), and will support implementation of actions under UN80 work package 1 as well as other relevant activities. • Prepares analytical reports and papers on sensitive and high-profile matters of concern to the General Assembly, Security Council, or other bodies; drafts notes, background papers, talking points, speeches and other correspondence for senior UN officials. • Participates in the organization and supervision of Secretariat services required by the Security Council and to other committees and bodies related to its work. The incumbent may provide dedicated support to the Security Council and its Working Group on Peacekeeping Operations as well as the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations (C-34) in their deliberations on recommendations from the review of peace operations. • Acts as focal point for collection and analyses of information on political issues of assignment. • Meets regularly with operational teams including UN staff, national officials as well as Military and Police officers to plan projects and review project activities, in particular as pertaining to the outcomes of the review of UN peace operations. • Provides up-to-date information to senior officials regarding substantive political matters with regard to the implementation of the Pact for the Future, and makes recommendations on actions to take. • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters; briefs representatives and provides, as appropriate suggestions and recommendations. • Participates in conferences, seminars and academic fora related to his/her assigned area of expertise. • Performs other related duties as required. EducationAdvanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Job - Specific QualificationNot available. Work ExperienceA minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required At least four years experience working in a UN peace operation and/or in peace and security at UN Headquarters is required. Experience in UN system coordination, integrated assessment and planning, implementation of joint programmes, or similar, is required. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English is required. French is desirable.
